The concept of the cathedral square in Elbląg
Designers: Wojciech Pytel
Area: 7100 m²
Location: Elbląg, Old Town
The project included the performance of spatial analyzes and the development of a concept supplemented with executive drawings.
The study site is located in a place rich in history and of great cultural importance. There are many historic buildings around. In the immediate vicinity there are also facilities in a modern style. These are tenement houses and the Zygmunt August Boulevard, rebuilt after the destruction warfare according to the retroversion program.
It was the combination of modernity and old history that became the main inspiration for the project. The designer decided that the square should show that:
"THE FUTURE IS A REFLECTION OF THE PAST".
Modern materials and technologies were used in the project. THE PAST, i.e. the buildings that existed in the area of the study, were inscribed in the square floor (simplified) and a modern fountain. The past has been highlighted by an archaeological exhibition with a descent to the underground. The design used many REFLECTIONS. The history of the city is reflected in the composition of the square, buildings, figures and reflections of light are reflected in the water surface ... in the end, the entire space of the square on its two sides is reflected.
